We use a 100% Natural Hand-loomed cotton in our Aji Filters, the cotton is grown in Bihar, India using natural farming methods that don’t include any nasty pesticides.

Is Cotton Food Safe?

Cotton is considered a natural fibre and has been listed as a food-safe material and doesn’t come in contact with pesticides or is Organically grown.

While we recommend that you boil your Aji Filter / cotton coffee filter for shrinkage purposes, this process is also a form of sterilisation and should be done before using any cloth coffee filter.

Cotton for brewing coffee

Cotton is one of the oldest forms of coffee filters that humans used to make coffee. In fact it is not uncommon to find reusable cloth coffee filters and traditional reusable cotton coffee filters in places like Brazil, Colombia and Ethiopia.

What to look out for in cloth coffee filters

When purchasing a cloth coffee filter ideally you want to find something that uses a natural or Organic cotton, you don’t want any nasty pesticides lingering around (commonly found in inexpensive calico’s and non-organic cotton textiles).

As well as this, you should also look at the traceability and how transparent companies are about how they go about sourcing cotton. You can read more about our cotton here.

This is also a good time to mention longevity of cloth coffee filters, while most cloth coffee filters and coffee socks advertise theirs to last 6-12 months. Our Aji Filters surpass this and last 2-3 years when stored and cleaned correctly.
