What is a cheesecloth?

Cheesecloth is a light weight open-weave material often made from cotton but sometimes from synthetic (plastic) fibres.

Cheesecloths are used to seperate solids from liquids are often used for culinary and cooking purposes such as making tofu, a nut milk bag to make various plant based milks as well as cheese making.

Can you brew with Cheesecloth?

Some cheesecloth’s can be used to make coffee with, make sure to use a natural cotton and definitely don’t use any synthetic cheesecloths as these could melt / leach plastic into your coffee.
It is also important to note that just because you can, doesn’t mean you should. There are so many variable when it comes to brewing pour over coffee and by using a cheesecloth you are guaranteed to be making things so much more difficult for yourself.

You may have noticed your cheesecloth has giant holes and at the bottom of your coffee you can visually see sediment. This is because the cheesecloth you used is not designed for pour over coffee and the holes are too large. Aji Filters on the other hand are still larger than paper filters but have comparably smaller holes to cheesecloth.

The light weight cotton used in Aji Filter turns into a silk-like texture when wet, this is a fantastic property for pour over. When the Aji Filter is wet it sticks to the walls of the drippers creating a tight seal that holds the brewed coffee inside the dripper and decreases bypass.
