WHAT IS AN AJI FILTER?

Aji Filters are a reusable cotton coffee filter made from some of the finest hand loomed cotton available.

Cloth coffee filters have been used to brew coffee for many years with some experts believing it to be the first ways humans filtered coffee and other food / drinks such as tofu and yoghurt.

What does Aji Mean?

The word ‘Aji’ directly translates to taste in Japanese, however it also is a type of fish and chilli pepper. We chose to call our cotton coffee filters ‘Aji Filters’ as we wanted to highlight the importance of taste in coffee, taste for us was a main factor when developing our filters.

We wanted to ensure that our filters are capable of making tasty coffee with out that dusty cotton taste.

WHAT MAKES AN AJI FILTER DIFFERENT FROM OTHER CLOTH COFFEE FILTERS?

Aji Filters last around 2-3 years, they are incredibly durable other cloth coffee filters advertise theirs last 6 months and at most 1 year, this is due to the high quality materials used paired with our double stitching and durable design.

Most cloth coffee filters use a sewing technique known as overlocking, these overlocked edges are fast and easy to assemble however these quickly fray and are the weakest points of the filter. Aji Filters don’t use any overlocking and use a sewing technique called ‘double stitching’ and ‘top stitching’, this is a process of sewing and then folding the filter over to then re stitch.

Our conical Aji Filters are sometimes sewn 2-4 times increasing the strength and durability of the overall coffee filter.

All this makes Aji filters the ultimate ecosential for every coffee lover.

How does a Fabric Coffee Filter taste compared to paper filters?

We have done heaps of test on our Aji Filters comparing them to paper coffee filters, heres what we found:

Paper is clean tasting and generally speaking results in a clean cup with a balance in acidity, texture and great flavour transparency. Some paper filters leave a papery taste in the cup and it is recommended to pre wet the filter with hot water to remove this unwanted taste.

Cloth coffee filters have slightly larger hole sizes compared to most paper filters and allow for more fine coffee particles and coffee oils to pass through, this results in a creamy and unique texture in the cup as well as a faster draw down time.

We advise that you grind your coffee finer when brewing with a cloth filter as this will increase the rate of extraction of your coffee and give you a coffee that is well balanced, flavourful, has insane texture and an added velvety creaminess to your final cup of coffee.

This flavour profile paired with our strogn values and social enterprise partnerships are what make Aji Filters so unique in a heavily paper-saturated coffee world.
